National award-winning student research advances Sustainable University reporting

Africa University’s investment in student-centred learning and research excellence continues to produce graduates whose work addresses real-world challenges.
Among them is Class of 2026 Bachelor of Business Studies (Honours) in Management graduate, Esther Panashe Kamangira, whose innovative research earned a Certificate of Distinction for the Best University Student Research Award at the 14th Zimbabwe International Research Symposium last month.
The prestigious recognition celebrates a research project titled, “A Sustainable Integrated Asset Reporting System for Africa University,” which presents an innovative approach to strengthening institutional reporting by capturing the full value of university assets beyond traditional financial measures.
The project, supported through the Africa University Small Grant Scheme, addresses a growing need within higher education institutions to account for a broader range of resources that contribute to institutional success. By incorporating the six capitals of integrated reporting—including human, intellectual, social and natural capital—the proposed digital system offers universities a more comprehensive and sustainable framework for measuring and communicating their impact.
Reflecting on the achievement, Esther described the award as a defining moment in her academic journey.
“Receiving a Certificate of Distinction marked a significant milestone in my academic journey. This recognition reflected not only my dedication and effort, but also the passion, perseverance and conviction that guided the project from its inception,” she said.
She explained that the research was driven by a desire to develop practical solutions for the higher education sector while contributing directly to Africa University’s continuous institutional development.
“The project was especially meaningful because it combined academic rigour with practical application. Its primary goal was to develop a digital tool that enables universities to report on the six capitals of integrated reporting in a more systematic manner. Knowing that this work could benefit Africa University initially, and potentially other institutions in the future, provided a strong sense of purpose.”
Esther was quick to acknowledge that the success was made possible through collaboration, recognising the contributions of her research team, which also included Dr Rumbidzai Dumisani Muzira, Dr Stanislas Bigirimana (mentors) and fellow student Mr Brighton Sigauke, whose expertise and commitment strengthened the project.
“This achievement resulted from collective effort. I had the privilege of collaborating with a dedicated team whose contributions were essential to the project’s success. Each member provided valuable input through research, technical expertise, analytical insight and support during challenging periods.”
Commenting on the achievement, Africa University’s Director of Research and Innovation, Professor Eltony Mugomeri, said the award reflects the University’s commitment to research that delivers practical solutions with measurable impact.
“The Sustainable Integrated Assets Reporting System underscores Africa University’s commitment to investing in high-impact research that addresses institutional and societal challenges. We are particularly encouraged that this project has progressed from a funded research idea to a nationally-recognised innovation,” he said, adding that: “This achievement also demonstrates the value of collaborative research, bringing together experienced academics, technical experts, and student researchers. Such partnerships create opportunities for mentorship, knowledge exchange, and innovation, while equipping students with practical research experience and enabling them to contribute meaningfully to solving real-world problems.”
