Investing in women, transforming futures: AU marks International Women’s day

Africa University joined the global community in commemorating International Women’s Day, hosting an interactive and thought-provoking celebration on March 9, that highlighted the power of investing in women as a catalyst for institutional and continental transformation.

The event, jointly organised by the university’s TAGDev 2.0 programme and Human Resources department, brought together students, faculty, administrators, and partners to celebrate the achievements of women while reflecting on the collective responsibility of advancing gender equality. Observed worldwide, the International Women’s Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while serving as a call to accelerate progress toward gender parity.

Dean of the School of Law, Dr. Tendai Nhenga, who delivered the event’s welcome remarks, underscored the importance of inclusion, service, and shared responsibility in shaping equitable institutions.

“Supporting women through service, inclusion and shared responsibility is a guiding principle for advancing gender equality,” she said. “The philosophy Give to Gain: Investing in Women for Institutional and Continental Transformation reminds us that empowering women is not an act of charity, but a strategic investment. When institutions intentionally invest their time, resources and opportunities in women, the returns extend far beyond the institution to families, communities and nations,” she said.

Guest speaker, Dr. Musline Munodawafa from the Women’s University in Africa challenged participants to recognise the resilience and transformative leadership of women across societies.

“While women go through so much in their lives, they do not remain victims and will not remain the same as we continue creating safe spaces,” she said, adding that: “Women possess urgency and power while remaining compassionate, a unique and powerful combination that we must celebrate and support.”

Adding a practical and entrepreneurial dimension to the programme, Dr. Thomas Masese  from the College of Business and Management Sciences facilitated an engaging and interactive commitment session titled Contribution to Enterprise: Turning What I Give into Growth. The session encouraged women to harness their skills, creativity, and networks to explore entrepreneurial opportunities and build sustainable ventures that contribute to economic growth.

The celebration reflected Africa University’s broader commitment to nurturing inclusive leadership, empowering women across disciplines, and creating opportunities for the next generation of African leaders.

“Your work and your words have reminded us that investing in women is truly investing in a better future,” Miss Ayanda Chikondi Mwale, finance secretary for the Students’ Representative Council said, applauding the speakers and organisers for inspiring both students and staff.

As the institution continues to shape graduates who lead with purpose across Africa and the world, the International Women’s Day commemoration served as a powerful reminder that investing in women is not only a moral imperative but a strategic pathway to sustainable development, innovation, and shared prosperity. Throughout Women’s Month, the university proudly celebrates and honours the remarkable women within its community—students, faculty, staff, and alumni—who continue to demonstrate leadership, resilience, and excellence across academia, industry, entrepreneurship, and community development.
