AU Football Tourney Kicks Off Amid Thrills, Heavy Rain
By Tendai Sithole
Football lived up to its reputation as the beautiful game this past Saturday, January 24, when grit, rain, and sheer willpower characterised the opening day of the highly-anticipated Africa University Football Tournament at the AU Grounds.

The tournament brings together six teams representing different campus communities and will be contested in a league format, with two matches scheduled every weekend through to the end of the semester.
A torrential downpour had already set the tone before the teams stepped onto the field, and when the opening whistle blew, it launched not just the match, but a gritty contest against the elements. Sections of the sports grounds were transformed into a wetland, with a lawn that felt more like wading through a shallow river.
Yet, in a testament to the campus spirit, the sidelines remained packed. Enthusiastic supporters braved the relentless rain, chanting and cheering, proving that not even a deluge could dampen the fire of this tournament.

“Honestly, I thought everyone would run for the hostels when the rain started, but it actually made the experience better. Seeing the players sliding in the mud and the crowd screaming, it’s the best break from the books I’ve had all semester (so far),” Odilon Dias, a first-year student from the School of Law said.
The opening match saw the DRC Community silence their critics with a crushing 6–0 victory over the Angola–Mozambique Community.
Despite pre-match bravado from the Ango-Moz Captain Batista, who predicted a clean 2–0 win, his squad was dismantled in the rain. His DRC counterpart, Gabriel Oyombo and Coach Yav predicted dominance, and they delivered. Roland opened the scoring, and the DRC never looked back, proving they are the early favorites for the title.
“We told them beforehand. My coach predicted a win based on our history, and I said 3-1. We actually did double that. The rain was heavy, but our hunger to win was heavier. This is just the beginning for DRC,” skipper Oyombo, a student in the College of Health, Agriculture, and Natural Sciences said after the match.

The second match between East Africa and West Africa Student Association (WASA) was a tragicomedy. The game ended in a 1–1 draw, but the scoreline hides the funny reality: WASA was so dominant that they decided to handle the scoring for both teams. The East Africans equalizer came courtesy of a “heartbreaking” WASA own-goal.

“It was chaotic in the best way possible. Even with the rain, everyone looked like they were having the time of their lives. Watching WASA score against themselves was the highlight of my week,” Tatenda Chigwanda, a second-year student in the College of Health, Agriculture and Natural Sciences said.

The other teams competing in the tournament include the Zimbabwe Community and the Malawi-Zambia Community.
As the tournament progresses, football fans on campus will be eagerly watching the upcoming matches. The DRC Community will look to build on its strong start, while the Angola-Mozambique Community will be seeking a turnaround. Meanwhile, teams like East Africa and WASA will be looking to bounce back from their opening-day results. With the rain adding an extra layer of excitement to the proceedings, the stage is set for a thrilling tournament. The student body is eagerly anticipating the next matches, with teams vying for supremacy and bragging rights in the Africa University Football Tournament.
