Africa University Hosts Public Lecture by Bishop Emmanuel Sinzohagera-Burundi-Rwanda Episcopal Area, on Leadership, Ethics, and Public Responsibility
Mutare, Zimbabwe — 25 March 2026
Africa University’s Institutes of Peace, Leadership and Governance and Theology and Religious Studies, together with the Office of Career Advising and Professional Development, the Department of International Relations and Diplomacy, and the Department of Business and Entrepreneurship, convened students, faculty, and members of the wider community for a timely and thought-provoking public lecture delivered by Emmanuel Sinzohagera—Resident Bishop of the Burundi-Rwanda Episcopal Area, former Dean of the Cabinet, and former Speaker of the Senate in Burundi. A respected church leader and public figure, his work spans faith, governance, and national leadership.
Held in person and virtually, the lecture formed part of the university’s ongoing commitment to fostering critical dialogue at the intersection of ethics, leadership, and societal transformation. The session attracted a diverse audience across colleges and academic disciplines reflecting the intercollegiate and collaborative spirit nurtured among faculty and students.

In his address, Bishop Sinzohagera challenged participants to reflect deeply on the role of ethical leadership in contemporary society, particularly within the spheres of business, politics, and public service. Drawing from his experience in both ecclesiastical and national leadership, he emphasized the importance of integrity, accountability, and moral conviction in navigating increasingly complex governance and economic landscapes.
He emphasized that ethical leadership is not aspirational, but essential, particularly in contexts where public trust has been eroded. Leaders, he noted, must embody values that promote justice, transparency, and the common good, even in environments where such principles are often tested.
The lecture also explored the role of faith-based perspectives in shaping ethical frameworks, with Bishop Sinzohagera highlighting how Christian values can inform responsible decision-making and servant leadership. He encouraged young leaders to resist cynicism and instead commit to principled leadership that prioritizes long-term societal impact over short-term gain.
Africa University’s leadership represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Engineer Talon Garikayi reiterated the institution’s dedication to nurturing transformative leaders equipped not only with academic excellence but also with strong ethical foundations. The public lecture series remains a key platform for engaging global thought leaders and exposing students to diverse perspectives that enrich their academic and personal development.

Participants described the lecture as both inspiring and challenging, noting its relevance to current global and African realities. The discussion that followed provided an opportunity for attendees to engage directly with the speaker on pressing issues related to governance, ethics, and leadership in practice.
As Africa University continues to position itself as a hub for intellectual exchange and leadership development, engagements such as this public lecture reinforce its mission to develop graduates who are not only skilled professionals but also principled leaders committed to transforming Africa and the world.
