A Time for Remembrance, Gratitude, and Celebration: Africa University Welcomes Students, Faculty, and Staff Back to a New Semester With Dedication Service

On August 19, 2026, Africa University joyfully ushered in the new academic year with a Dedication Service filled with prayer, fellowship, and hope. The gathering brought together students, faculty, and staff in the Kwang Lim Chapel, setting a vibrant tone of renewal and unity for the semester ahead.
The ceremony began with a heartfelt moment of remembrance, as candles were lit in honor of beloved members of the AU family who had passed on since the last full campus gathering. Among those remembered were Mr. Temba Shayanewako, a driver in the Fleet and Facilities Unit; Ms. Tsvakai Chipepera, a Security Guard; Mr. Hasmonia Makaza, a Network Engineer in the ICT Department; Mr. Rogerio Armando Bila Junior, a third-year student in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) from Mozambique and Dr. James T. Laney, whose vision and faith helped establish Africa University and left a legacy of service and dedication to higher education. Their lives and contributions continue to inspire the AU community to live with purpose and commitment.
The service also celebrated the remarkable contributions of long-serving staff members preparing for retirement. Mrs. Ramila Parmar, who joined AU in 2004, expressed deep gratitude for her years of service in the Offices of the Registrar and Vice Chancellor, describing her work as a source of joy and fulfillment. Reverend Nday Bondo, who joined the university as a lecturer in 2008 and retires as Head of Department in the Institute of Theology and Religious Studies, reflected on the transformative role the university played in his life having also been a student. Both retirees received standing ovations from their peers and students , reflecting the love and appreciation of the AU community.
Guest Preacher Reverend Jairus Mafondokoto, Assistant to the Bishop for the Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, and Botswana Episcopal Area, delivered a stirring sermon based on Ecclesiastes 3:1–8. He encouraged students, especially first-years, to embrace their season at Africa University with passion, faith, and determination, reminding them that every moment is an opportunity to grow and flourish.
With the AU choir lifting spirits in song, the chapel filled with energy and anticipation. The Dedication Service was a time for celebration , a marker of resilience, centering gratitude, and the promise of new beginnings. As the Africa University family steps into the semester, the ceremony has set a hopeful tone, one of optimism, fellowship, and a shared commitment to shaping a brighter future together.
