The 2019 Student Ambassadors Merit Awards which were held at the Golden Peacock Victorian Hall on the evening of Saturday the 23rd of March was an electrifying night to remember. The awards ceremony is an annual event on the student calendar in which the Student Ambassadors of the Office of Advancement and Public Affairs recognise those distinguished students and members of staff who excelled throughout the academic year in their studies, support of the community, sports, spiritual development and other areas.
The 2019 edition was held under the theme Fire and Ice and was hosted by Munashe Jerera a 2nd year student in the International Relations programme and Rumbidzai Munyengeterwa a 1st year enrolled in the Social Work Programme. The awards that were given included the Entrepreneur of the year, which was won by resident Photographer cum Graphic Designer Remmy Kapend from the Democratic Republic of Congo. This award speaks to the initiatives of enterprise development and innovation that are encouraged and supported by the university especially through its innovation hub, the i5Hub.
The awards are a way of promoting integration, unity and school spirit by recognizing exceptional and admirable traits within the student body and amongst staff that others can learn from and emulate within their respective communities. They also act as an impetus to the students who receive nominations to continue striving for excellence bolstered by the support and acknowledgement of their peers.
The entertainment provided to the over 200 students was nothing short of world class with a scintillating traditional mbira performance that showcased and celebrated the Zimbabwean culture given by Danai Sisimayi, a final year Business Management student. She sang an original composition named Rudo which means love in the Shona dialect that espoused the virtues of compassion and love for those around us. Offering students a platform to showcase their talents is an integral part of Africa University’s many student development programmes and vision.
Other performances of the night came from the energetic dance group, Reflection Arts who delivered one of their best acts ever. This group is a cross cultural community of students who share a passion for dance which was much appreciated by those in attendance. Some of the other categories with awards up for grabs included Sportsman of the year, Sportswoman of the year, Fellowship group of the year and Club of the year among others.
Overall, the event registered tremendous success and received positive feedback from the university community who hailed it as a must- attend event that inspires the university to do and be better. AU takes pride in pioneering student centred events that not only offer entertainment but nurture talent, innovation and Ubuntu.
