16 December 2020-In what has become a tradition at Africa University, the Chaplaincy hosted the last Wednesday service of the year 2020 with a Christmas themed celebration that lifted hearts and urged the community to remember and hold fast to the ubuntu ethos especially during the festive season.
Reverend Nday Bondo who represented the Chaplain during the service said,
” This is a very special service where we are able to reflect on the year that was and close our semester together in worship. We remember this Christmas time and all the optimism that it holds while also remembering our community .”
Reverend Bondo led a special moment of silence for Michael Muzarurwi, a third year student in the College of Business, Peace, Leadership and Governance who sadly passed away in the early hours of Monday the 14th of December 2020.
In keeping with the message of fortitude, resilience and optimism, Mrs. Vimbai Mudarikwa, a Library Assistant in the Jokomo Yamada Library and guest preacher for the service said,
“Today my sermon theme is , “Call out to Jesus today”. He is the only constant in times of difficulty and does not, under any circumstances, disappoint. Family, friends, partners, all these may abandon you in your darkest hour but not God. Complete submission and surrender are required. Ours is not to know his ways but to trust the path that he is leading us on. It is in calling out to Jesus that true strength and understanding come.”
The service was graced by music from the Praise the Lord Choir that sang Christmas Carols to mark the festive period with popular songs, Away in a Manger, Joy to the World and Oh Holy Night, sung in English, French and Portuguese, infusing the rich diversity of the Africa University campus into the celebrations.
A celebration cake for distribution to congregants was generously provided by the Bonaventure Ndorimana Dining Hall with Vice Chancellor Professor Munashe Furusa cutting and dividing the cake that was shared along with cupcakes and tea.
Africa University remains a great place to serve in the hearts of its staff and students who throughout the year 2020 stood by and for each other in a true show of one of the institutions’ core values of Ubuntu.
