Africa University hosted the 2019 edition of the Hoja Youth Summit from the 29th of July to the 1st of August at the university main campus in Mutare. Over 150 students from Higher Education institutions form across Zimbabwe attended namely Great Zimbabwe University, Chinoyi University of Science and Technology, Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences, Marymount Teachers College, Mutare Polytechnic amongst other students from private institutions for across Africa.
The Africa University Transformers Club worked with the university following the club successfully winning a bid to host the esteemed Summit that was previously held in Nairobi Kenya in 2018. The word, “Hoja” is a Swahili word that means move and encourages the youth to from a movement for change, Pan- Africanism and development.
This year, the summit was hosted under the theme, “Agenda 2063: Youths, the drivers of a peaceful and prosperous Africa”, and was graciously sponsored by Zimbabwean Philanthropist Mr. JM Busha, CEO of the JM Busha Group. Through Mr. Busha’s efforts, the vibrant philanthropic arm of his organization has been involved in social investment aimed at promoting education, peace, unity and harmony across the continent.
The main scope of this years’ summit is to provide youths, particularly those within tertiary institutions a platform to share ideas so that they can impact meaningful change within their respective countries so that ultimately Africa is able to meaningfully contribute to the global development agenda having achieved the objectives laid forth in the industrialization blueprint of Agenda 2063.
Speakers lined up to attend the prestigious event include Mr. Patrick Mavhura, Chief Executive Officer of the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation, Mr. JM Busha who is the Guest of Honour and Key Note Speaker of the Summit, Miss Namatai Kwekweza, a youth motivational speaker and activist among others.
The Hoja Youth Summit is expected to contribute towards efforts to increase youth participation in development, African emancipation and global affairs that ultimately coalesce towards the ideals of peace, justice and equity for all.
